A fluke

History shows that after seven years a new employee filled the barrels with new malt wine with all good intentions. He discovered his mistake with the seventh cask, which later turned out to have been the birth of this unique, beautiful Jenever. This created a liquid in which taste tones of the 23-year-old and 7-year-younger spirits miraculously reinforce each other.

What am I tasting?

Nose: characteristic sweet notes of caramel, raisins, vanilla and dried figs with surprisingly fresh spicy notes of sandalwood and timut pepper

  • Licorice root

    Licorice root

The sweet and powerful seasoning extracted from the roots of the licorice plant gives an unmistakable rich, full flavor reminiscent of caramel, with a hint of spiciness and subtle notes of licorice.

  • juniper berries

    juniper berries

The juniper berry provides the characteristic taste of jenever: fresh bitter, slightly spicy. In collaboration with the Drentse Jeneverbesgilde, we pick these ourselves every year on the Drentse heath.

  • iris root

    iris root

Iris root is the rhizome of the iris plant. Iris root has a pleasant scent and is used as an ingredient in perfumes, potpourri and sachets.

  • Grain

    Grain

Grains are the seeds of grasses that are used as a food source worldwide. They are rich in carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins and minerals and form the basis for many foods.

Sherry oloroso barrels are barrels originally used to age sherry wine. Oloroso is a type of sherry that is darker, richer and more intense in flavor. These casks are often used in the gin (and whiskey) industry to age gin, enriching the gin with the characteristic sherry notes, such as dried fruit, nuts and spices.

For our gins we always use malt wine according to a secret recipe, made from (preferably) Groningen grain. Malt wine is a distillate (via the pot still method) distilled from grains. Malt wine has a clearly discernible grain aroma and each jenever has a unique malt wine composition.

Each Hooghoudt spirit contains a unique selection of the finest regional herbs from the Hooghoudtherb garden on the Ewsum estate. Classic monastery herbs such as nettle leaf, blessed thistle herb and orange peel bitter give our gins a fine, soft taste. In addition, spice supplier Jacob Hooy supplies the best natural herbs to complement our regional herbs.
