juniper berries
It is the juniper berry that provides the distinctive taste of jenever.
In the Netherlands, the juniper has a legally protected status. The strong decline of the juniper has several reasons, such as sensitivity to fungal and insect pests, heather fires and hardly any germination of new plants. The latter is probably because most shrubs are no longer grazed and open germination spots no longer arise. It Juniper guild sets up both projects and studies to protect the juniper.
