1888

Passion from the start

In a cellar on the Oosterstraat, in the center of Groningen, Hero Jan and Grietje prepare Hooghoudt full of liqueurs and regional drinks. They discover a rich world of flavours.

1889

Big Crooked Elbow

Things went well so quickly that in 1889 Hero Jan and Grietje exchanged the cellar in the Oosterstraat for a beautiful, deep building on the Grote Kromme Elleboog, the building where Bob Kookt now resides. Hooghoudt is soon the term for a tasty and above all original, self-distilled liqueur.

The first posters

Sales to cafés in the city of Groningen are slowly growing. Hero Jan and Gretel Hooghoudt take the plunge and start advertising on a small scale in 1893.

1898

Prices for girl

When Hero Jan dies of pneumonia, Grietje continues independently. In 1898 she received an important recognition at the world exhibition Industry & Art Industry. It is the start of a rain of prizes for quality and taste.

1914

Foundation stone of Syne and Ludolf

The liqueur distillery is too big for the building on the Grote Kromme Elleboog. An initial renovation is needed. Syne and Ludolf lay the first stone on April 15, 1914.

1920

The Old Clear

An important year, 1920. Grietje distils the first jenever, the Oude Klare. It is now going so well that expansion is necessary again. Hooghoudt moves to the Nieuwe Ebbingestraat.

1922

Valencia Syrup

In 1922, after much experimentation, Ludolf introduced lemonade syrup made from the juice and peel of Spanish oranges. The Valencia is a success.

1926

The 2nd generation

Syne and Ludolf take over the distillery from Grietje in 1926. She is then 65 years old.

Born: Hero Jan junior

Ludolf and his wife Manny have a son whom they name after the founder of the family business: Hero Jan Junior.

Stamp action

In the anniversary year of 1928, the third generation Hooghoudt born, liquor stores and catering entrepreneurs can save for gifts and find Hooghoudtenthusiasts ten foreign stamps on the back of each bottle.

50 years Hooghoudt

In 1938 there is Hooghoudt 50 years and that is celebrated with a savings campaign for liquor stores and catering. It's an absolute hit.

Fruit wine keeps the distillery going during the war.

Young Double Grain Gin

Hero Jan junior and his father Ludolf have formed the management together since 1958. A groundbreaking innovation and a television premiere follow. The Jonge Dubbel Graanjenever turns the jenever market upside down.

First TV commercial

As the first distillery to put Hooghoudt in 1968 television advertisement. In 1973, sales of the Jonge Dubbel Graanjenever stood head and shoulders above the rest of the range.

Introduction of the first herbal bitter

The next successful introduction is kicking off: Kalmoes Beerenburg. Introduced in 1973 Hooghoudt the gin drawn on lemon peels.

1986

New premises

The distillery has already grown out of its jacket. Reason to build a new building outside the city. A stone jug with eight liters of jenever goes twenty meters into the ground together with the first pile.

De Hooghoudtstraat

Hooghoudt exists 100 years. With the official opening of the new building, the family distillery receives a royal award and its own street name.

2012

A new face

The third and fourth generation of the family Hooghoudt, Hero Jan Hooghoudt junior and Bert Hooghoudt, reveal the new Hooghoudt-logo. Three Rijke Jenevers also show a new face.

125 years

Hooghoudt has a birthday and treats! The family distillery celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2013 by fulfilling the wishes of Groningen residents.

Collaboration Kensington

Hooghoudt and Kensington are working together. Traditions and beautiful moments are shared with the band from Utrecht. The release in August of “Rivals”, Kensington's third album, kicks off the joint adventure.

Baptize Gretel

On April 23, 2014, Hero Jan junior baptizes the new distillation kettle Hooghoudt. With a small ceremony, the new copper kettle, handmade in England, is named Grietje. This is how the family distillery honors Grietje Hooghoudt.

Premium Jenever is the latest discovery of Hooghoudt. It is a new young gin. Fantastically pure with unprecedented taste nuances. Velvety soft and full of character. Refined and outspoken

Special edition

In 1996, we placed gin made from 100% barley, specially malted with coriander seed, in oak Sherrt Oloroso barrels. After 18 years of maturing in peace, each barrel has acquired its own unique colour, aroma and taste.

Summer is on Hooghoudt all about the Dirty Jenever: the ultimate fresh mix of Hooghoudt Sweet Spiced Genever, Ginger Ale and lime. A mix that immediately creates a summery beach feeling. From 2020 we start every summer well with a super fun Sweet Spiced campaign!

Hooghoudt launches Blended series

With the Blended series Hooghoudt their take on three popular whiskey categories: Bourbon, Talking and Oloros. They are blends of copper-fired malt wine and grain distillate. These have each been aged in oak barrels for at least three years.

Hooghoudt announces a new partnership with distributor Park 375 Avenue Spirits. The latter is part of Sazerac Company and serves the United States from Louisville, Kentucky

Hooghoudt launches two ultra premium Jenevers,

Family Distillery Hooghoudt launches two ultra premium aged Jenevers in March. both were fired in 1998 by the third and fourth generation Hooghoudt and placed as single malt in old ex-Oloroso casks.

Hooghoudt Aged 24 year, the second generation

An ode to the second generation, Syne Barend and Ludolf Wietse Hooghoudt. The Aged 24 is a unique gin with a base of home-distilled malt wine made from 100% barley. Aged for 24 years on Sherry Oloroso cask #574 and enriched with botanicals such as cranberry and Ceylon tea.
